Crystal Cascade update: faster cascades and better controls

Update — 19 September 2026: These measurements and interface changes describe the September 5 Crystal Cascade build. The game is now Prospect Hollow; the release guide explains the later town and puzzle content. The timings below remain results from the older test build.

Crystal Cascade has an updated interface and a substantial performance pass. The twelve chapters are still there, but matches resolve faster and the controls behave more consistently. The technical details are in docs/analysis.md; here are the changes you’re most likely to notice while playing.

Quicker matches and more predictable input

  • Faster cascades. Falling and refilling now happen together, with the next match popping 90 ms later. Most chains resolve in roughly a quarter of a second, compared with the old 800 ms fall-and-refill sequence before the pop. Swap animations drop from 180 to 115 ms, and rejected swaps from 240 to 150 ms.
  • More consistent dragging. A swap commits to the adjacent cell as soon as a drag crosses 22% of the cell edge. It no longer waits for you to release somewhere farther across the board.
  • Safer input during swaps. Rejected moves keep input locked until the board settles, preventing a second tap from interrupting a partially resolved move.
  • Better resizing and session handling. Browser resize events are grouped to reduce renderer work, and results from an old session can’t be applied to the current board.
  • Consistent hints. Hints now inspect the actual board state instead of running a random cascade simulation to decide whether a move is available.

The updated interface

The chapter collection has its own screen, and the in-game display is more compact. The board has a frame, the power toolbar sits along the bottom, and Focus mode hides surrounding controls when you want more room for the puzzle. Dialogues now use native modal behaviour.

The visuals include six faceted gems, three animated bonus icons, five illustrated powers and two stages of ice. They use 85.6 KB of SVG artwork. Particles are reused instead of being allocated every frame, with limits of 320 sparks, 128 ice shards and 160 decorative particles.

Reduced-motion and high-contrast settings now feed directly into the renderer.

What changed in the code

One significant issue was Vue treating the Phaser game instance as reactive data. Removing that wrapper avoids unnecessary tracking work as the game renders.

The cascade solver also handles the rare chains that previously failed to terminate correctly, running once for each chain.

The cleanup removed obsolete AI-tool configuration folders, the old GEMINI.md, debug controls and around 19 MB of unused sprite sheets. The dependency check went from twelve npm advisories to zero at the time of this update.

The checks cover 33 Vitest cases and headless desktop and mobile layouts. CI passes on Node 20.19+ and 22.12+.
